International Rescue Committee Volunteer Opportunity

  • Apr. 21, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

The Refugee Committee has an exciting opportunity for you all. On Sat., April 21, we welcome anyone interested in going out to serve the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a refugee resettlement agency in Charlottesville. We understand that Lynchburg Serve is the same day, but if you are interested in serving refugees in a nearby community, this is your chance! We will be working with IRC staff to remove trash and clean up brush in a new field, "Haven Garden", they will be using in their urban farming program for refugees called New Roots.

This program teaches refugees about nutrition and farming in the U.S. as well as gives them an opportunity to participate in the local food market where they sell their produce. For those refugees who were farmers in their home countries, this gives them an opportunity to do a fun and familiar project they are good at in an often overwhelming and unfamiliar culture they are learning to live in.

Schedule

  • 7:30 a.m. Meet at Sheetz (3927 Wards Rd.)
  • 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Working at the site
  • 1:30-2 p.m. Return to Sheetz.

Time includes a 1 hour and 15 minutes drive each way
