Honors Program Description

Prospective Students (Resident)

Thank you for your interest in the Honors Program at Liberty University. Our Honors curriculum is designed to provide highly motivated students of above average ability the opportunity to achieve their highest intellectual and creative potential. We currently have 637 Honors students from 44 states and 12 foreign countries in our program receiving academic scholarships, 48 of whom are National Merit Finalists.

If you are a high school senior with an SAT of 1270 or an ACT of 29 and an unweighted GPA of 3.50, or a college student with a 3.50 GPA and are in your second semester freshman year, you may qualify for an Honors scholarship, which is $4,000 per year. An Honors student who meets the grade point average criteria can amass up to $16,000 worth of scholarships over four years.

Eligibility for High School students:

• GPA of 3.50 or higher (unweighted)
• 1270 SAT (critical reading and math) or 29 ACT

Eligibility for Transfer or Liberty students:

• Fewer than 60 credit hours
• GPA of 3.50 or higher

An early class registration period, smaller class size (17:1) for general education Honors seminars and a generous scholarship are just a few of the benefits enjoyed by our Honors students. Once Honors students reach junior status, they petition one Honors course per semester in their desired major field of study.

Additionally, the experience of completing a Senior Honors Thesis is especially beneficial for those who, upon graduation, choose to pursue graduate degrees at other institutions of higher learning that request a writing sample as part of their application process. Many of our recent Honors alumni have been accepted into some of the nation's (and the world's) leading graduate schools:

• Cambridge, Edinburgh, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Duke, Vanderbilt, NYU, North Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Georgetown, Tennessee, Florida State, Florida, Syracuse, Pepperdine, Hawaii, Purdue, Georgia and Virginia Tech.

The number of Honors scholarships is limited, so students are encouraged to make application to the program early in the spring semester. When applying, please send all the materials--application, transcripts, essay and three letters of recommendation--in one envelope to the Honors office.
