Practicum Requirements

Students are required to complete 150 hours of practicum during an academic semester. At least 40 hours must be direct service with clients; the remainder may be direct or indirect hours.

  • Direct hours must involve interaction with others and may include assessment, counseling, psycho-educational activities, and consultation.
  • Indirect hours may include observing others providing counseling or related services, record keeping, and administrative duties.

Early in the semester, you will receive an email from LiveText granting you access to your student's electronic evaluations. If you do not receive an email, first check with your practicum student to ensure he or she has submitted the proper form for you to be given access. If the student has already filled out the form, you should be able to gain access to your student's LiveText evaluations using the login instructions.
The following evaluations must be completed for your practicum student:

  • Preliminary evaluation of candidate's performance (including professionalism, dispositions, and counseling skills)
  • Final evaluation of candidate's performance (including professionalism, dispositions, and counseling skills)
  • Evaluation of student's recorded session (student will also complete a self-evaluation on the session)

Your student will use LiveText to log the hours he or she has completed in the practicum placement. You should approve these hours periodically throughout the semester.

Recorded Session

The student should record a counseling session for review by the professor, the student, and you. The recording should be approximately 20 minutes in length. Either an audio or video recording is acceptable. The student must gain signed consent using forms provided to them by the university. If you have questions regarding the recorded session, please contact your student's faculty supervisor/university professor. If the course has not yet begun, you may contact with questions regarding this session.
