Internship Program

Communications or Studio & Digital Arts students

Registering

Am I eligible for an internship?
Every student completing a degree in COMS or SADA must complete at least 3 credit hours of internship to graduate. You must have:

  • Junior or senior status
  • 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Declared COMS or SADA major
  • Completed 24 hours within your major (not including COMS 101)
  • No more than 1 GNED/CSER behind

How do I get my internship class on ASIST? You may have noticed that you cannot add a COMS 499 or ARTS 499 class to your schedule like a normal class. It’s because of the many prerequisites.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Attend an internship workshop the semester before you plan to complete the internship. This is where you will receive detailed instructions and required paperwork. Look for emails from School of Communication throughout semester announcing dates/times of workshops.
  2. Fill out paperwork you received at workshop. This will include your internship contract that your site supervisor must sign.
  3. Hand all completed paperwork in to COMS/SADA faculty internship advisor (Professor Bruce Kirk).
  4. Your class then magically appears on your ASIST account. (We’ll add it).

What are the deadlines for handing in paperwork?

  • Summer internship – April 30 (attend workshop in spring semester)
  • Fall internship – April 30 (attend workshop in spring semester)
  • Spring internship – November 30 (attend workshop in fall semester)

*The prerequisite approvals and contract takes time to complete. Do not wait until the last minute.
Who is my faculty internship advisor? Professor Bruce Kirk – bmkirk@liberty.edu.

Additional Information

How many hours of work do I need to put in at my internship?
A 3 credit hour internship requires that you work at least 180 hours.

  • You may choose to register for an internship for more than 3 credit hours. Up to 6 credit hours are allowed.
  • For each additional credit hour you register beyond 3, add 60 hours of work to your internship requirements.
  • Additional internship credit hours can be used to fulfill upper level elective requirements on your DCP.

I have a great internship lined up but I don’t think I can get 180 hours of work. You may register for less than 3 credit hours at any internship site provided you plan to do another internship for the remaining credit hours/work hours, e.g., 1st internship site with 2 credit hours/120 work hours, 2nd internship site with 1 credit hour/remaining 60 hours work. (This will require separate contracts for each site).

Can I do an internship in my minor?
No, your first 3 credit hours of internship MUST be within your major.

Can I start my internship hours early?
No. All your internship hours logged must be completed within the semester in which you are registered for the course.

Can I do an internship for more than a semester?
Yes. However, you will need to fill out a separate contract for each semester.

Can I receive credit for an internship after I have completed the internship?
No. Students wishing to receive credit for an internship must register for the internship the semester before they do the internship.
