This week students in Professor Amos' SMGT 497 class were able to get an inside perspective on the professional sports world. Students traveled to Washington, DC and were able to meet with Liberty University Sport Management Graduates as well as other key personnel and executives from Monumental Sports & Entertainment (Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards), DC United, the Washington Redskins, and the National Football League Players Association.
Students were able to tour facilities, learn about each person's role in their organization and how their organization operates, ask questions, and network with industry leaders. The annual trip is a part of the Department of Sport Management's Special Topics Courses which offer students a variety of opportunities to customize their learning experience and to learn from, and network with, industry professionals.
The Department of Sport Management is currently accepting applications for a Graduate Student Assistant position beginning in the Spring 2016 semester.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in or will be enrolled in either the Sport Management (General), Sport Administration, Outdoor Adventure Sport, or Tourism Graduate Program for Spring 2016, but are not required to have completed a Sport Management related undergraduate degree. The position will last for two years; GSA's will be required to work 20 hours per week; and compensation will include a full tuition waiver and stipend.

Congratulations to Ryan Conaghan, Michael Evans, Nick Antique, Skylar Spencer, Dallas Peyton, Chad Williams, Duggan Parks, Andrew Harrison, and Dominic Beckman on being selected as Sport Management Scholarship Recipients.
All students who complete their Practicum are eligible for the scholarship the following academic year. Recipients are chosen based on Academic Achievement, Involvement in the Sport Industry, Community Service Work, Financial Need, and Recommendation from the Faculty. Funds for the Scholarship Program come from the semi-annual Golf Classic, a Golf Tournament that students in the Sport Marketing class organize and help run every semester.

The Department of Sport Management is is excited to announce the hiring of two new Adjunct Professors for the 2015-2016 academic year: Daniel Pritchard and Brian Davidson.
Daniel Pritchard is the current Athletic Director at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Virginia. Prior to becoming an Athletic Director Dr. Pritchard was a coach in multiple settings, for several sports, with various age groups. He has also had the opportunity to be involved in the planning and construction of several all-sport facilities. He holds a Doctorate in Innovation and Leadership, a Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration, a Masters in Leadership, and a Bachelors in Math Education.
Brian Davidson is a sports junkie who fell in love with God. Brian has been in full time sports ministry for 30 plus years and has traveled the world over using the platform of sports to make disciples. He along with his wife Christine of 34 years have founded two sports ministries - the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club and Sports Friends. Brian currently serves as the Chaplain for the Orleans Firebirds and the LU Hockey Team. Brian received his Bachelors from Houghton College and his Masters in Christian Ministries.

Kevin Clark is from Trumbull, Connecticut and has been a Site Director for Newtown Parks and Recreation, a Student Worker for Athletics Communications, an AAU Basketball Head Coach, and an Assistant Basketball Coach at Liberty Christian Academy all during his time at Liberty. Kevin will be graduating Magna Cum Laude and has achieved a 4.0 within the Sport Management Major Classes.
Matt Cook is from Rustburg, VA and has gained a wealth of experience coaching. Matt has been the Offensive Coordinator for the 7th and 8th Grade Football Team and an Assistant Coach for the JV Football Team, the Varsity Football Team, and the Varsity Baseball Team at Altavista High School. He served as the JV Head Basketball Coach and Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach at Rustburg High School and a JV and Varsity Basketball Coach at Clearview Christian School. Matt has also worked as a Student Video Coordinator for the Liberty University Football Team and as a Student Manager for the Liberty Baseball Team.
Clint Lowe is from Farmington Maine and during his time at Liberty, he has been a key part of the golf program. Clint is currently the Team Manager for the Liberty University Golf Team and the Liberty Invitational Golf Tournament and is the General Manager of Poplar Forest Golf Course.

The Department of Sport Management will be hosting a reception for Graduating Undergraduate and Graduate Students and their families and friends.
If you are graduating please drop by the reception for food and drinks and an opportunity for you and your friends and family to meet and talk with the Sport Management Professors. This is an informal event so feel to come and go as you please. We hope to see you there!
Liberty University’s Master of Science in Sport Management program has received accreditation from the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). The undergraduate sport management program has held COSMA accreditation since 2011.
“Despite our graduate program being young (just finishing its fifth year), we are thrilled that COSMA recognizes how our program stands out in its commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in sport management education,” said Dr. Clark Zealand, director of graduate studies for the Department of Sport Management. “The uniqueness of our program specializations strategically positions us well to offer students from all over the world advanced, innovative training with a Christian worldview. We have worked hard to achieve this level and look forward to a bright future.”
The M.S. in Sport Management, available both residentially and online, is designed to prepare effective leaders in the sport industry. Graduates are equipped to excel in careers such as adventure sport management, collegiate athletic administration, sports communication/advertising, event management, facility/arena management, outdoor recreation/park management, professional sport management, recreation and tourism management, and resort management. The program features specializations in outdoor adventure sport, sport administration, and tourism.
COSMA is a specialized accrediting agency body focused on promoting and recognizing excellence in sport management worldwide in colleges and universities at the baccalaureate and graduate levels.
During Spring Break, a group of 11 Sport Management Students made the typical college student pilgrimage to Florida. However, this was not your typical Spring Break trip. This trip was led by Sport Management Professor Chris Amos and was designed as a way for students to examine and experience Central Florida's Sport Tourism Industry.
The students were able to meet with Tim Brought, the Sports Event Manager for ESPN's Wide World of Sports; Erik Anderson and Chris Cavender, the Director and Assistant Director of Stadium Operations for Osceola County Stadium (Spring Training home of the Houston Astros); and Kirk Wingerson, Marketing Division Manager of the Amway Center (home of the Orlando Magic and Solar Bears).
During this SMGT 497 class trip, students were able to learn about promotions, marketing, event and facility management, sales, and tournament and special event structuring among many other topics in a region that is tourism based. Students also had an opportunity to shadow and assist Mr. Anderson and Mr. Cavender during an Astros/Cardinals Spring Training Game.
Last week ten Sport Management students led by Dr. Heisey attended the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston. The students were able to attend a number of sessions at the conference in which some of the speakers included Adam Silver (NBA Commissioner), Bob Meyers (GM, Golden State Warriors), Daryl Morey (GM, Houston Rockets), Don Garber (MLS Commissioner), along with over 100 others. The students were able to meet and talk with hundreds of representatives and coaches from college and professional sports teams as well as numerous sports media personalities and other influential figures in the sports industry.
