New Tilley Student Center open to students

September 19, 2008 : University Advancement staff

Students who enjoy music and fellowship in a coffeehouse-style setting now have a new hangout spot on Campus North, with the opening of Liberty’s Tilley Student Center. The center is located next to the recently renamed LaHaye Student Union, which encompasses the new student center and campus recreational facilities.

At Friday’s grand opening, Student Activities hosted a free concert with The Glorious Unseen and My Epic. The event also featured food and door prizes.

Aspiring artists and musicians will also have their chance to take the stage on Monday, Sept. 22 as Student Activities presents Open Mic Night. Performers can display their talents with an original song, poem recital or skit.

LU’s Director of Student Activities Chris Misiano said in addition to concerts and karaoke, the Tilley Student Center will also show movies and host other weekly events.

Formerly used for warehouse space, the Tilley Student Center will allow students to relax between classes, grab a cup of coffee, surf the net wirelessly or play a friendly game of pool.

The remodeling project was made possible in part by a donation from Thomas and Iris Tilley, the parents of Becki Falwell, wife of Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. Becki said she lobbied her parents for the donation because she saw such a great need for this type of student center on campus.

“My parents have supported Liberty since the early 1970s. I am thrilled that they were able to help make this center a reality,” she said.

Misiano said the center will provide students with more space on campus for social interaction. “It will be open late and will give students a first class venue for musical performances, movies and simply hanging out with friends.”
