The Liberty community participated in the nationwide Cans Across America effort Wednesday, collecting more than 6,207 pounds of canned food.
The food is being delivered on Friday to the Lynchburg Daily Bread, which serves Lynchburg area families in need.
The campaign was sponsored by Sodexho, which provides food services at Liberty and more than 530 other colleges and universities.
The company was attempting to break a Guiness Book of World Records for the largest food drive by a non-charitable organization in a 24-hour period by collecting more than 396,833 pounds. The overall total is not yet available.
Liberty’s canned food drive was one of the biggest in the region, Sodexho reported. Cans were collected Wednesday outside the Schilling Center where an annual fall communion service was being held for all students, faculty and staff.
