Rita Schellenberg, Ph.D., an associate professor and director of the School Counseling Program at Liberty University, has crafted a one-of-a-kind study guide to help school counselors build knowledge and skills applicable to any national certification test format.
“The School Counselor’s Study Guide for Credentialing Exams,” published by Taylor-Francis/Routledge Mental Health, hit shelves in April and will be used by school counselors nationally and internationally.
“The study guide is intended to prepare school counselors in training for comprehensive exams and licensure exams and to prepare practicing school counselors for advanced voluntary credentialing exams,” Schellenberg said. “It was my own search and inability to locate a study guide for the National Certified School Counselor Exam that became the impetus behind this labor of love that covers content relevant to all school counseling exams.”
Schellenberg’s book is the only study guide in existence for the NCSCE.
It is also the only one to incorporate American School Counselors Association School Counselor competencies, Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs standards, National Board of Certified Counselors National Certified School Counselor Examination content requirements and standards for the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education and National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
“There is a growing demand for accountability and enhanced counseling services for children and adolescent in the schools, which has further heightened the need for continuous training and skills development that results in advanced credentialing,” Schellenberg said.
The book is a one-stop shop for counselors preparing for any certification exam. It includes case scenarios, guided reflection questions and actual exam practice questions. A full-length practice exam is provided at the end and gives the answers with explanations for correct and incorrect responses.
The book has been well received in the counseling world, earning many endorsements from renowned industry professionals and a foreword penned by ASCA President Sylinda Gilchrist.
“Before this study guide, a school counselor would have to perform the daunting task of compiling information from several different resources, which requires exhausting hours of research,” Gilchrist writes. “With the numerous responsibilities and workloads of most practicing school counselors, this search for adequate resources becomes an extraordinary source of frustration and a major hindrance in the pursuit of certification. Dr. Schellenberg has eliminated this barrier and this book has the potential to encourage more school counselors to pursue national credentials.”
Schellenberg has over a decade of experience as a professional school counselor at both the elementary and secondary levels. She was recognized by the ASCA as one of the top 15 school counselors in the nation and was honored as an “outstanding graduate” in her Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University. She has authored many successful publications and serves as the research chair for the Virginia School Counselor Association. Schellenberg is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and a National Certified School Counselor.
