Selah yearbook now available online

Selah editor-in-chief Whitney Moon handed out information during the yearbook's annual release party.

Liberty University’s award-winning Selah yearbook is meeting the digital needs of this generation by releasing its first online edition this week.

The yearbook staff held its annual release party on the front steps of Arthur S. DeMoss Hall on Wednesday, displaying the new edition and giving away free snow cones and cotton candy to students.

The online version is free and includes yearbooks from 1974-2012. Readers log on to the LifePages website, where they can set up an account. The site is interactive, with photos and videos. People can search for classmates and digitally “sign” other users’ yearbooks.

Sophomore Whitney Moon, editor-in-chief, said the books are “the best of the history that is made at Liberty each year.”

She said making the edition available online for free “just sounded like common sense.”

Sophomore Jacob Anspach, one of the designers, said the team “put our hands in this new interactive media with the yearbook” and was excited “to be the first to do this and to do it well.”

Sophomore Mary-Helen Norris attended the release party.

“I think the new yearbook is great because it’s so interactive and it will last longer because the Internet is forever,” she said.

Selah has also partnered with Key Color Inc. to offer a “print-on-demand” version, where people can order a 75-page printed book for a fee, with 10 free additional pages they can customize with their own photos on premade templates. Users can upload pictures from Facebook, Twitter and various other social networking sites.

Moon said the staff began researching their options last fall. She said many people had input during the process, including Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.; Ron Kennedy, Senior Vice President for Marketing at Liberty; and Laura Sipple, Director of Marketing for University Publications.

Selah has consistently won design awards and was recently awarded a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
