Advertising, Public Relations students recognized nationally

Advertising and Public Relations students at Liberty University have made quite an entrance into the New Year.

Christopher Wong, a senior majoring in advertising, was awarded one of the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) 2010 Most Promising Minority Student Awards in December.

The honor entitles Wong to free travel and accommodations to New York City on Feb. 2-4 for the AAF national conference, where he will be presented with the award and participate in special seminars. In addition, he will have the opportunity to interview with top agencies and media outlets from around the world.

According to the AAF website, the event provides opportunities “to recruit fresh talent, to further prepare advertising’s best young prospects and to help the industry's workforce better reflect the multiculturalism of today’s society.”

Wong said he is excited to learn from experts in the field.

“Experiencing the etiquette of the most elite organizations will give me the opportunity of a lifetime to learn the proper function of society and the marketplace,” he said.

Winners are chosen by a panel of advertising experts and are based on academic standing, demonstrated interest in the ad industry, leadership potential and community service involvement.

During the Fall 2009 semester, communications professor Dr. Angela Widgeon encouraged Wong to apply for the award.

“God has given me a path to success at Liberty University through the passion of professors like Dr. Widgeon, who push their students to reach bigger and higher heights than they would have thought they could,” Wong said.

In the Public Relations department, December 2009 graduate Danielle Jacobs has achieved a great feat as one of five finalists chosen for the PR Week 2010 Student of the Year award. PR Week is a leading industry publication with print and online editions.

As a finalist, Jacobs received an all-expense-paid trip to New York City for the Jan. 25 competition. The winner will be awarded $5,000 and a paid internship at the major public relations agency Hill & Knowlton, headquartered in Washington, D.C. One runner-up will win a $1,000 prize and a paid internship at Hill & Knowlton.

“I’m very excited — I think it will be a beneficial experience especially as a new graduate,” Jacobs said.

Last semester, as part of the Communication Campaign course, Jacobs conducted research and devised a strategic PR plan for Mazda, a client of Hill & Knowlton. For the project, students aimed to create a big splash in the social media world, with a balance of more traditional media outlets. Their projects were submitted to PR Week to compete against other students from colleges throughout the country. At the New York competition, Jacobs will be required to pitch her plan to a panel of PR experts and respond to a crisis communication scenario.

 


Public Relations and Advertising are just two of the concentrations offered to students in the School of Communications. Concentrations offer a more specialized track to prepare students for their future careers.
Professors in the PR and Advertising concentrations have a wealth of real-world experience as well as superb educational backgrounds to ensure that students are given up-to-date training in their fields. The average teacher-student ratio is about 1:18, which allows individual attention and mentorship.
