Snowflex Fall Festival brings in $2,000 and tons of food for hunger relief

October 7, 2013 : Liberty University News Service

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre hosted the grand opening for four new tubing runs during its Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5. The event also served as a fundraiser for Gleaning for the World.

Admission was granted through either a cash or canned food donation to help the organization meet the needs of local families. Approximately 6 tons of food was collected — about 3,000 cans — and $2,000 was raised by the end of the event.

The festival attracted more than 1,500 visitors.

Andrew Young, communications director for Gleaning for the World, said the event was “very successful.”

"We are so thankful for Liberty's support,” he said. “This was a great opportunity for us to get out and meet the community that we try to help as well as let us give back."

Drew Sherwood, manager of LMSC, called the day a “big success” for Liberty University, the Snowflex team, and sponsors — Wal-Mart, WSET, and Gleaning for the World.

“To be able to help feed so many families and to be a part of something so life-changing was rewarding for our team,” he said. “We enjoyed seeing all the families and individuals come out to try the new tubing park and help make a donation to local families that are really hurting right now.”

Since the year-round ski slope opened in 2009, it has regularly sponsored community events and teamed up with charitable organizations.

Snowflex will join Liberty’s Office of Military Affairs for its Military Family Fun Day this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will allow members of the armed forces and their families to enjoy the new tubing facilities and ski slope. Face painting will be offered for children, who can also expect a special visit from LU Flames mascot Sparky. A free lunch will be served. Active duty, National Guard, and reserves are asked to bring their military ID, while veterans should bring a copy of their discharge orders, DD-214, or discharge certificate. Families can RSVP via www.Liberty.edu/MilitaryEvents.
