Liberty University’s Winterfest is under way at the Vines Center. At this year’s annual event thousands will ring in the New Year listening to Stellar Kart, Sanctus Real, Jeremy Camp and other Christian artists.

Liberty University welcomed thousands at its Winterfest kick-off today. Starting at 12 p.m. Winterfest attendees could ice skate at the LaHaye Ice Center and check out Liberty’s facilities. At 6 p.m. junior and senior high school students had the chance to attend an artist meet-and-greet session.

Liberty University once hoped to build a 125-acre lake on Liberty Mountain for student recreation, but the dream seemed impossible when LU officials learned that Virginia would require them to spend millions in wetland credits to offset the environmental impact.

A new club sport is coming to Liberty University that will test students’ physical strength, flexibility, agility and coor-dination. Beginning in January, the university is adding gymnastics to its list of club teams. Practices will be held every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at the Lynchburg Academy of Gymnastics & Power Tumbling located about three miles from LU on Leesville Road.

Conservative activist Paul Weyrich, a great ally of Liberty University founder Dr. Jerry Falwell, died on Thursday at age 66. Best known for coining the term “Moral Majority,” Weyrich was a strong figure in the Christian political movement that he co-founded along with Falwell and Tim LaHaye. The Moral Majority thrived throughout the 1980s, with a membership including Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons and Jews who agreed on certain core social issues.

Students are eagerly awaiting their new Liberty University-Barnes & Noble bookstore and they should have it by March. Construction on the two-story brick superstore located on Main Campus across from the entrance to Williams Stadium is ongoing.

Liberty University is pleased to announce Pepsi as the first corporate sponsor of the Ultimate LU campaign. Under the agreement, the beverage company will help support the university's men's and women's hockey teams as well as various on-campus events and outdoor activities.

The Virginia Christmas Spectacular, Thomas Road Baptist Church’s holiday musical featuring church members, the choir and Liberty University students, will be broadcast on Trinity Broadcasting Network throughout the United States and the world on Friday, Dec. 19 (11 p.m. EST).

For the second year in a row, the Columbia Scholastic Press out of Columbia University has named the 2008 edition of Liberty University’s “Selah” yearbook as one of the top collegiate yearbooks in the country. The ‘I Am’ edition was one of only nine collegiate books in the United States to receive this recognition.

Several Liberty University administrative departments at Campus North displayed their Christmas spirit during a Christmas Decoration Contest Thursday. Admissions Processing was the winner by unanimous decision. Workers welcomed the judges into their own version of Santa’s village, decorated in minute detail — from the North Pole Post Office to the Reindeer Stables.

Most kindergarteners are not yet thinking about their college education, but Simon Nolen from Appomattox Primary School in Appomattox, Va., is way ahead of the game. During an American Red Cross “Quarters That Care Campaign,” Simon’s name was drawn for the first-place prize in a Red Cross student giveaway — a four-year scholarship to Liberty University worth nearly $60,000.

Liberty University hosted a National Guard holiday program on Saturday, Dec. 13. The First Battalion 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team held its holiday program, which consisted of a dinner and an information fair, in the Liberty Schilling Center and Reber-Thomas Dinning Hall.

Four Liberty University students started working as “archaeologists in training” in Israel on Dec. 5 under the supervision of Dr. Randall Price, Director of Excavations and Executive Director of LU’s new Center for Judaic Studies.

The Liberty University Department of Music & Humanities presented “A Classical Christmas” at Heritage United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Wednesday night. The concert included traditional Christmas carols performed by the Liberty University Chamber Singers, Brass Chamber ensembles and select faculty.

Finals week can often be a stressful time for students as they prepare for winter break. Some residents are finding time to relieve that stress by exercising in Liberty University’s new multi-purpose aerobics room. Recently, workers transformed the old Mountain Frost Creamery ice cream shop at Campus North into a fitness room, complete with a Sprung Floor that is ideal for a variety of physical workouts.
