The Brand Identity Guide

Liberty University seal

The Liberty University seal is the most revered symbol of Liberty University’s mission and heritage.

The seal depicts Thomas Road Baptist Church aflame with the fire of the Gospel, against the background of an open Bible. The flame within the seal depicts the motto, “Knowledge Aflame,” and evokes the University’s guiding philosophy - that knowledge has validity only when viewed in the light of Biblical Truth.

The seal’s octagonal border reflects the Jeffersonian architecture of the building which first housed the University.

The Liberty University seal is the trademarked property of Liberty University. It may not be used by any individual or group on printed materials, websites or in other media without the prior written consent of Liberty University. All manufacturers or retailers wishing to produce or sell items bearing the seal or any other trademark of the university must receive licensure to do so from the university’s licensing agency, Licensing Resource Group (www.lrgusa.com).

Use of the seal is strictly reserved for the following applications only:*

Graduation diplomas

University acceptance letters
Issued by the Office of the Vice Chancellor in conjunction with Admissions.

Official transcripts

University-level awards
Awards presented at the highest administrative levels for university-wide benefit may display the seal. School, department, or unit-level awards may display the word mark, which is the university’s official logo.

Official course catalogs
Because of their legal, academic nature, the course catalogs published by the university may display the seal on the title pages.

Color

The university seal is traditionally printed in metallic ink or foil. In black and white publications the seal must be printed in gold; in blue and red or color publications the seal must be printed in silver.

Alternate versions

The seal may also be printed in black, university blue, or white.

Consistent with the usage guidelines above, the seal may not be used as a graphic element in a design. The seal may not be used as a watermark.

Sizing and spacing

A margin of space at lease equal to the width (outside edges) of the circular banner must be left around the seal. No modifications may be made to the seal’s shape, proportions, design or color.

Because of the complexity of the seal, it must not be printed or displayed at smaller than one inch across.

*Departments are granted one year to comply with the May, 2008 revision of the Brand Identity Guide. Thus, all existing applications of the seal not approved in this document must be removed by May 15, 2009.
This includes seals on doors, stationery, letterhead and business cards. All digital copies of the seal on file should be deleted, as multiple versions of the seal have been used in the past.
