Steven Gonzalez was hired at Liberty in December 2016 in the role of Associate Director of Athletic Communications.
Before arriving at Liberty, Gonzalez was at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. where he served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. His primary sports were men's soccer, baseball, women's golf, men's & women's tennis and was the secondary contact for men's basketball. While at GCU, Gonzalez helped revamp a communications department by implementing a new social media plan. Gonzalez worked directly with former MLS Coach of the Year, Schellas Hyndman, as well as former Major League Baseball player and GCU baseball coach, Andy Stankiewicz. While living in Phoenix, Ariz. Gonzalez was hired as the Director of Media Accreditation for the Copa America Centenario Tournament in 2016. During the prestigious tournament, Gonzalez was in charge of serving as a liaison between the national soccer teams that included the United States, Mexico and Uruguay.
Prior to GCU, Gonzalez served as an Athletics Communications Graduate Assistant at Northern Arizona where he served as the primary media contact for the women's soccer and men and women's tennis programs. He also assisted with the coverage of all 15 intercollegiate sports at NAU. In 2014, Gonzalez was a part of the Big Sky champion women's soccer team that made an appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
Gonzalez graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in electronic media & film from NAU in 2013. During his time at NAU, Gonzalez worked as the sports director for NAZ Today News for three years. At NAZ Today News, his requirements to write scripts, interview athletes and coaches and anchor sports on a nightly newscast.
Additionally, Gonzalez also worked for the Northern Arizona men's basketball team serving as the social media manager under head coach Jack Murphy during the 2012-2013 season.
A Phoenix native, Gonzalez attended Saint Mary's High School. He is the son of Robert and Loretta Gonzalez and has an older sister, Amanda.
Gonzalez graduated with a Masters in Communications in 2015.
