Dan Lumpkin

Title: Director of Player Development

Dan Lumpkin joined the Liberty women's basketball coaching staff in August 2017 as the program's first Director of Player Development. In this role, he will serve as the Lady Flames' video coordinator, aid in developing life skills and strategies for each player and assist Head Coach Carey Green in various capacities. Lumpkin formerly served as women's basketball head coach at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tenn., with 25 years of collegiate coaching experience.

Lumpkin won 337 games at Cleveland State at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I level, making him the winningest basketball coach in the school's history. His teams made it into the NJCAA Division I rankings a number of times over the years, with the highest ranking being No. 7 during the 2010-2011 season.

Lumpkin had over 40 players selected to the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) All-Conference teams and NJCAA Region 7 All-Region teams, and had two selected as NJCAA All-Americans. His teams were TCCAA Conference and NJCAA Region and District Tournament runners-up in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and Lumpkin was selected as 2016 TCCAA/NJCAA Region 7 Coach of the Year.

Prior to moving into the junior college ranks, Lumpkin was an assistant coach at Martin Methodist College, which won the 1995 Small College National Championship. Before coaching at Martin Methodist, he was a graduate assistant for two seasons at Austin Peay.

Lumpkin earned his bachelor's degree in English (1992) and master's degree in English (1994) from Austin Peay. He was also the softball head coach at Martin Methodist College from 1994-1997 and at Cleveland State from 1998-2002 where his team achieved a national ranking during the 2002 season.

Lumpkin has been heavily involved in the NJCAA over the years. He has been on the NJCAA Board of Directors as the Region 7 Women's Director for the past 16 years, as well as a member of the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball and Division I Softball Committees. Lumpkin additionally served on the  Women's Basketball Division I National Tournament Seeding Committee and All-American Selection Committee. He was a Sectional Director for the National Poll, and a member of the At-Large Selection Committee since the JUCO National Tournament's expansion to 24 teams. He was Vice-Chair of the Division I Districting Committee and served for two years on the NJCAA Executive Committee, and was also a member of the Executive Committee of the TCCAA.

Lumpkin, a Louisiana native, is married to Dr. Kelly Lumpkin, who was also recently hired as a faculty member in the Athletic Training Education Program at Liberty. The couple has three children, Danny, MiKayla and Jordan.
