Liberty women's soccer closed out the weekend on the road against Louisiana State. The Lady Flames hung tough for 90 minutes, limiting LSU to a season low in shots but LSU scored in the 87th minute to defeat Liberty 1-0.
The Tigers remain as one of two undefeated teams in the SEC, improving to 6-0 while Liberty drops to 2-4-2. Liberty tallied the same amount of shots as LSU (8) and attempted six corner kicks compared to LSU's four. In her first game against a Power 5 opponent, freshman goalkeeper Melody Jayroe came up with four saves. Seven players attempted shots for Liberty with Sierra Lam being the only player with more than one shot.
Liberty wasn't intimidated by the SEC opponent, attempting three of the first four shots of the game. Not only was it an early attack from the Lady Flames but also a balanced attack as Liberty's shot attempts during the first 17 minutes of play came from three different players. Liberty tested LSU goalkeeper Carol Brockmeier early as she came up with two saves in a four minute span.
While Liberty was looking to attack on offense, its backline was exceptional in the first 45 minutes, allowing just four shots. Liberty's backline did not allow a shot on goal until the 31st minute and that would be the only save Jayroe would have to make in the first half.
The Lady Flames went into the break tied at 0-0. Sierra Lam led Liberty with two shots in the first half as the Lady Flames out shot LSU 5-4 in the first half.
It was a slow start to the second half for both teams on offense as only three shots were attempted during the first 26 minutes of the half. Offense remained an issue for both teams throughout regulation as seven shots between the two teams were attempted in the second half with LSU finding the game-winner in the 87th minute. LSU's Lucy Parker would give the Tigers the win off a shot outside the box that would hit the side bar.
As Liberty closes out the week with a 1-1 record, the team will return to Virginia for one game next week against James Madison on the road on Thursday. Liberty's matchup against JMU will be its final non-conference matchup of the season.
