Liberty Claims 2-1 Decision Over Rutgers

Liberty and Rutgers opened the 2019 Texas A&M Invitational with a pitchers' duel that the Lady Flames took by a 2-1 score, Friday at Davis Diamond.

Liberty improves its season record to 2-4, snapping a four-game winless streak, while the Scarlet Knights' record levels at 3-3.

Scoring Summary
LIBERTY – 3rd INNING – Kara Canetto singles to left, advances to second on the throw, Kaitlin McFarland and Amber Bishop score, 2-0.
RUTGERS – 5th INNING – Anyssa Iliopoulos homers to left, 2-1

Notable Numbers
- Both teams managed just three hits, while Rutgers committed the game's lone error.

- Julia DiMartino (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits, striking out seven and walking one. After giving up a leadoff double in the first, she retired the next 12 batters in a row.

- Whitney Jones (2-2) drew the loss, giving up two unearned runs on three hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

- Autumn Bishop went 2-for-2 for the Lady Flames, while Canetto batted 1-for-3 with two RBI.

- All three of Rutgers' hits went for extra bases, as Jess Hughes and Nicole Bowman both doubled and Iliopoulos hit her fourth homer of the season.

Turning Point
- With nobody on and one out in a scoreless game in the third inning, McFarland sent a drive to left that was dropped by the left fielder. A groundout sent her to third. Amber Bishop was then walked before stealing second.

- Canetto then laced a two-run single to left, breaking a scoreless tie.

- Iliopooulos led off the fifth with a homer, trimming the deficit in half to 2-1. Bowman followed with a double, but DiMartino retired nine out of the next 10 batters to close out the victory.
