Quinnipiac Holds Off Liberty, 1-0

The Liberty field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision at Quinnipiac, Friday afternoon at Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.

With the loss, the Lady Flames fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Bobcats improve to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play.

Quinnipiac senior Lauren Belskie scored the match's only goal, coming in the 18th minute. Belskie collected a pass from Ines Ruiz Martinez and ripped a shot through the legs of Lady Flames goalkeeper Allison Schaefer for her third goal of the year, giving Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead and the only goal it needed for victory.

Liberty staged a fierce rally in the closing four minutes, which featured a pair of penalty corner chances. With just over three minutes to play, Liberty's sixth corner of the contest came up empty, as a Bobcat defender blocked Agueda Moroni's shot attempt. In the ensuing scrum, Bobcats goalkeeper Livy Golini kicked aside Abby Julius' effort to knot the contest.

With Liberty's entire unit pushed up, the Lady Flames drew their seventh and final short corner of the game with 11 seconds remaining, allowing the time to run off the clock. With 0s on the clock, Mallory Fortenbaugh's insertion found stick stopper Cassidy Bremner.

Bremner fed a pass to Moroni, who turned and passed to Jill Bolton. Bolton's shot was blocked, allowing Quinnipiac to come away with the 1-0 triumph.

Golini (3-6) tallied four saves in the shutout effort, while Schaefer (3-4) made two saves on the afternoon.

Liberty's best scoring attempt in open play came in the 15th minute. After forcing a turnover, Moroni entered the QU circle and ripped a reverse shot that clanged off the crossbar.

The Lady Flames' final two penalty corners of the half netted no shots on goal.

The Bobcats nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute. Calla Wilford slotted a forehand shot on goal, but Schaefer kicked away the shot with her right pad.

Overall, Liberty outshot Quinnipiac, 13-6, and outcornered the Bobcats, 7-3. Bolton and Moroni paced the Lady Flames with four shots apiece, while Belskie led QU with two shots.

Up next for the Lady Flames is a match at Yale (3-2). Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn.
