Thoughts From Head Coach Jeff Maren
"Our fight was there today but not our execution, especially on crucial points. We will be working on this in preparation for VCU next week."

How It Happened

  • Despite the Lady Flames' victory in the doubles session, the Paladins won the match on the strength of its No. 1-4 singles players. Furman's Katty Weymouth handled Maria Medina of Liberty in two sets (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2 singles, followed by No. 33 Katarina Kozarov's straight-sets victory (6-1, 6-2)  against the Lady Flames' Lara Soares on court one.
  • Leading 2-1, the Paladins officially closed out the contest with a pair of three-set wins at No. 3 singles (Julia Adams) and No. 4 singles (Madison Dillon). Adams battled past Liberty's Kalani Soli, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3. Dillon of Furman defeated the Lady Flames' Ashley Bongart in three sets as well, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
  • Liberty won the doubles point for the third time this season. On court three, seniors Bongart and Anna Dollar picked up their third victory of the spring and eighth overall on the year, 6-2 over Furman's Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Taylor Melville. Soli and Grace Hashiguchi made it 1-0 Lady Flames by virtue of a 6-3 decision over Weymouth and Dillon in the No. 2 doubles contest.
  • With Furman's four straight singles victories deciding the outcome, the Paladins and Lady Flames split the matches on courts five and six. On court six, Kerman erased a one-set deficit to Alexandra Almborg and won in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, 12-10. Kerman claimed the match, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10).
  • The final match to be completed was between Hashiguchi and Furman's Georgie Walker. Hashiguchi won a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set by a 10-7 score to take the match, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. The Liberty sophomore is now a perfect 3-0 in spring singles matches, with one victory each at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 slots in the lineup. Her win provided the Lady Flames their second point of the day.
  • Furman is now 2-0 all-time against Liberty with victories in 2017 and 2019.

Next Up

  • Liberty will play its third straight road match, when the Lady Flames travel to Richmond to face the VCU Rams (4-2). Match time is slated for 11 a.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
  • The Lady Flames and Rams were scheduled to play in 2018, but that match was cancelled due to inclement weather. Liberty and VCU have met one time, with the Rams winning that match by a 4-3 score in Lynchburg on Feb. 19, 2016.
