Thoughts From Head Coach Jeff Maren
"It took us a while to adjust to the courts and tough opponents, but we all finished better than the way we started. This was definitely a learning experience for us, one that will allow for growth and an opportunity to play better in our next match."

How It Happened
The Demon Deacons dominated the doubles session, sweeping the three matches. It marked the first time Liberty has lost all three doubles matches since Jan. 21, 2018 at Boston University.

  • Wake Forest's top pairing of senior Emma Davis and junior Chandler Carter defeated Liberty's Lara Soares and Kalani Soli 6-2 on court one. The Demon Deacons' Anna Brylin and Anna Ulyaschenko, the 46th-ranked pairing in the country, clinched the doubles point and made it 1-0 with a 6-3 decision over Lady Flames sophomore Grace Hashiguchi and senior Maria Medina.
  • Wake Forest won on courts six, two and five to go up 4-0 and officially capture the match. All three of those victories from Carter, Ulyashchenko and Brylin came in straight sets over their opposition (Anna Dollar, Medina and Alexandra Almborg). Brylin's 6-0, 6-4 victory over Almborg in the No. 5 match clinched the victory.
  • A win from No. 44 Davis (6-2, 6-4 over No. 64 Soares) made it 5-0. Liberty's best chance to earn a point came in the No. 3 singles bout between Soli (Liberty) and Eliza Omirou (Wake Forest). Omirou prevailed in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, 12-10, to take the match, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10).
  • Leading 6-0, the Demon Deacons closed out the 7-0 triumph with a two-set triumph from Saby Nihalani over Lady Flames senior Ashley Bongart on court four.
  • Liberty's six singles players struggled in the first set, winning a combined five games. However, the Lady Flames played much better the rest of the match, taking a combined 24 games from their counterparts.
  • The Lady Flames are now 7-12 all-time in season openers and 0-3 all-time against Wake Forest.
  • Wake Forest was among others receiving votes in the first Oracle/ITA top 25 poll of 2019 and finished No. 27 in the nation in 2018.

Next Up
• Liberty will look to pick up its first win of 2019 when it travels to face UNCG. Match time between the Lady Flames and Spartans is set for 1 p.m. and will be UNCG's season opener.
• The Lady Flames are 2-3 all-time against the Spartans, but they won the last matchup between the two teams by a 5-2 count on March 2, 2018 in Lynchburg.
