Liberty Nabs Pair of Singles and Pair of Doubles Wins on Day 1 of ITA Atlantic Regional

The Liberty women's tennis team recorded four total wins, two in doubles and two in singles, on day one of competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional, Friday at the Cook Tennis Center.

Hosting the regional tournament for the second time in program history, the Lady Flames posted a 2-0 mark in doubles on their home courts on Friday afternoon.

Liberty's senior duo of Ashley Bongart and Anna Dollar controlled their round of 64 doubles match against Towson's Yevgeniya Shusterman and Lucy Gloninger on the way to an 8-3 triumph. Bongart and Dollar are 5-2 as a pairing, this fall. They will face the No. 4 seed, Virginia Tech's Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto, in a round of 32 match on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lady Flames' tandem of freshman Alexandra Almborg and sophomore Grace Hashiguchi picked up a dramatic victory in their first round match with Navy's Catalina Rico and Amanda Cyr. Hashiguchi and Almborg, playing together for the first time, edged the Navy duo in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5). They will now take on No. 5 seed Yulia Staodubsteva and Oleksandra Andrieiev in a second round match, tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Liberty's singles victories on the first day of the event came from Anderson and Hashiguchi. Anderson prevailed in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in her first singles qualifying match before dropping her second match to Marshall's Elizabeth Stefancic in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 7-5).

Hashiguchi lost in two sets (6-2, 6-4) to Lea Owens of Richmond but bounced back with a straight-sets victory of her own, 6-3, 6-2, versus Risa Nakagawa of Georgetown.

The five-day regional will resume on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Day two will feature singles main draw round of 64 matches, followed by doubles round of 32 and 16 bouts.
