Liberty seniors Maria Medina and Lara Soares both claimed singles titles in their respective draws on the third and final day of competition at the Hokie Fall Invite, hosted by Virginia Tech, Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames tennis squad was represented by four seniors at the invite and finished the weekend with a 19-4 record overall, 13-2 in singles and 6-2 in doubles, in a tournament featuring several strong opponents. The titles for Maria and Soares were both the first for each player in their Liberty careers.
"I'm extremely proud of how we performed today! Usually, there's a letdown in intensity on the last day of tournaments because they have played so much, but our girls decided to rise to the challenge. We were able to finish the tournament on a positive note," said Liberty Women's Tennis Associate Head Coach Giancarlo Lemmi. "A 19-4 record for a whole tournament is a great accomplishment."
Medina wrapped up a 4-0 weekend in singles by taking the Duty Singles flight title 6-4, 7-5 over VCU's Maria Alcaide Baka. Meanwhile, Soares captured the Ut Prosim Singles draw championship by besting Chelsea Sawyer of Penn State in three sets (6-3, 0-6, 7-5). Soares posted a 3-0 singles mark at the Hokie Fall Invite.
Medina and Soares competed in Sunday's final of the Brotherhood Doubles draw, falling to VCU's Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Kanako Yado narrowly by an 8-6 score. The duo went 3-1 in its doubles matches in taking second place, this weekend.
Fellow seniors Ashley Bongart (Honor Singles flight) and Anna Dollar (Leadership Singles flight) finished up a three-win weekend in doubles by defeating Delaware's Emily Gotkiewicz and Sarah Whited 8-3. Both Bongart and Dollar won in straight sets in singles on Sunday. Bongart bested the Iowa State Cyclones' Ekaterina Grib 6-2, 6-3, while Dollar knocked off Caroline Gibbens of Iowa State 6-0, 6-1. Both Liberty players were 3-1 in singles at the invite.
The Lady Flames' next fall tournament will be the ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Liberty at the Cook Tennis Center from Oct. 12-16.
