On day one of the Hokie Fall Invite on Friday at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, Liberty's four players, all seniors, won six of the seven matches they competed in.

The quartet of Ashley Bongart, Anna Dollar, Maria Medina and Lara Soares went 3-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles.

"We are still working on getting the rust off our games, but I'm proud of the way we rose up to the occasion of playing against some big-time schools," stated Lady Flames associate head coach Giancarlo Lemmi.

In the Brotherhood Doubles flight, Medina and Soares claimed two victories, both by narrow margins, to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. The Liberty duo first edged Caragh Courtney and Sarah Hall of Delaware in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (6).

The Lady Flames' pairing followed up the tight victory with an 8-6 decision over Penn State's Gabby O'Gorman and Chelsea Sawyer. Medina and Soares, now a perfect 4-0 this fall as a unit, will play against Iowa State's Mary Cancini and Annabella Bonadonna in a semifinal bout on Saturday at 9 a.m.

In singles, Medina defeated Margarita Timokova of Iowa State in a challenging three-set match (5-7, 6-0, 6-3) in the Duty Singles flight. She will square off with Delaware's Viva Laas in the quarterfinals on Saturday at noon. Meanwhile, Soares received a bye into the quarterfinals of the Ut Prosim Singles draw. She will meet O'Gorman of Penn State at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Bongart and Dollar split their matches in the Loyalty Doubles flight on Friday. They opened the tournament by defeating Olivia Rohrbacher and Olivia Ryan of Penn State 8-6. In a quarterfinal showdown, Regina Espindola and Caroline Gibbens of Iowa State edged Bongart and Dollar by an 8-6 count. The Lady Flames' pairing will meet Georgia Southern's Paige Christian and Elizabeth Goines on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Singles play saw both Bongart and Dollar win in straight sets. Bongart picked up her third singles triumph of the fall, winning in two sets, 7-5, 6-3 over West Virginia's Giovanni Caputo in the Honor Singles flight. The Bradenton, Fla., native will now face VCU's Kanako Yano in a quarterfinal matchup at noon, tomorrow.

Dollar topped Radford's Taylor Blalock in two sets, 6-0, 6-3 in the Leadership Singles draw. She will move on to the next challenge, a 10 a.m. match on Saturday versus Nourmea Witmus of the VCU Rams.
