Thoughts From Head Coach Derek Schwandt
"We were strong on the counterattack and measured on the attack today. This is a big factor in how we compete. We will continue to build on our conditioning this week."

How It Happened
• Sophomore William Barker, seeing his first action of the spring season, was paired with junior Nicaise Muamba at No. 3 doubles versus Marko Puric and Pablo Carranza. The Liberty pairing turned in a 6-1 victory over the Aggies. On court two, the Flames' Ian Sturgill and Rafael Marques Da Silva fell behind 3-2 to Jorge Goenaga and Esteban Lopez. However, the pair rebounded for a 6-4 victory to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 Liberty lead.
• After playing in the No. 3 doubles slot earlier in the day, Steve Mundt and Chase Burton moved into the No. 1 position and took on the Aggies' Nicolas Arduh and Vasil Ivanov. The Flames duo trailed 3-2 but took four of the last five games for a 6-4 win to give the home side the doubles sweep.
• Playing his second match of the day, Marques Da Silva (Liberty) knocked off Puric (NC A&T) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 on court two. Ferreira (No. 1 singles) led throughout his match on the way to a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Arduh to stretch the Flames' lead to 3-0.
• Thomas-Smith bested Ivanov 6-4, 6-2 on court three for a 4-0 Liberty advantage to clinch the match. Thomas-Smith, Da Silva and Ferreira each won two singles matches, Sunday.
• Sturgill, playing his first singles match in 2020, defeated Lopez in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) in the No. 5 position.
• Liberty's sixth point of the evening came from Mundt (No. 4 singles), who won in three sets 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) against his counterpart, Goenaga.
• NC A&T sophomore Nolan Martino put the Aggies on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win versus Barker on court six to close out the night.
• The last time the Flames opened a spring home schedule with a pair of wins on the same day came on Jan. 28, 2017, when they defeated King and Bluefield State.

Next Up
• Liberty's next match will be against the Longwood Lancers (0-0) at home on Friday. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at Crosswhite Athletic Club. The Flames have won 19 of the 25 all-time matches between the two schools. The two teams split a pair of meetings during the 2018 season.
