Gutierrez advanced to the singles main draw round of 32 with a win on Saturday.
Liberty Flames men's tennis players Chase Burton and Eddie Gutierrez each won their respective singles matches on day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional to advance to the round of 32 in the singles main draw, Saturday at the Cook Tennis Center.
Following a first-set tiebreaker (7-6 (2)) victory, Burton dominated the second set, 6-0, for a 7-6 (2), 6-0 triumph over the George Mason Patriots' Jakob Nielsen.
The win sends Burton to the round of 32 for a second straight year. The Naples, Florida, native will meet No. 14 seed Ammar Alhogbani of Virginia on Sunday at 9 a.m. Last year, Burton advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw at Virginia Tech.
Gutierrez continued his excellent play during the fall campaign with a straight-sets victory over VCU's Javier Amantegui, 6-1, 6-3. His eighth singles victory this fall puts him in tomorrow's round of 32, where he will square off against No. 2 seed Constant De La Basseteire of Penn State.
"Overall, it was another good day for the guys. We're starting to connect the dots between practice and implementation in matches," stated Flames assistant coach Beck Pennington.
Liberty sophomore Vince Salas took No. 1 overall seed Adam Moundir (ODU) to three sets on Saturday. Moundir won the first set, 6-4, before Salas took set, 7-5, forcing a third set. Moundir prevailed, 6-2, in the third for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory. Salas will play a consolation match, tomorrow.
The Flames suffered a pair of tough doubles losses in the round of 32, Saturday morning. Burton and Sebastian Mermersky fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (9-7) to the Virginia Tech duo of Ryan Kros and Feliksas Sakalauskas. The Liberty duo had match point at 7-6 in a back-and-forth tiebreaker, before the Hokies' pairing closed it out with the last three points.
Gutierrez and Salas lost to No. 3 seed ODU's team of Jacob Nicolussi and Michael Weindl, 8-2. Nicolussi, the No. 9 seed in singles, then went on to defeat Liberty's Alex Poynter, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 64 in the afternoon.
In other singles action, Flames senior Diego Castano topped Delaware's Dustin Britton, 7-6 (2), 6-3, in the men's open singles consolation draw. Liberty junior Max Borcuti defeated the Hampton Pirates' Peter Odegbami, 6-0, 6-3, in an extra match.
Mermersky dropped a lengthy three-set bout against Sakalauskas (Virginia Tech), 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4.
Day four of the ITA Atlantic Regional will begin at 9 a.m., Sunday at the Cook Tennis Center. The fourth day of competition will feature the quarterfinals of doubles, round of 32 singles and round of 16 singles.
