Liberty men's tennis closed out its time in California with another collection of victories on Sunday, the final day of the San Diego State Aztec Fall Invitational at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Over the course of the three-day event, the Flames collected 19 total singles victories and 10 doubles wins.
"Our guys represented Liberty well at this tournament," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt. "We are excited to keep building with some solid training and prepare to host the ITA Regionals at Liberty, Oct. 19-24."
Liberty senior Diego Castano prevailed in comeback fashion on Sunday, defeating UC San Diego's Zachary Ermert, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Sophomore Vince Salas required just two sets to best San Diego State's Nicholas Mitchell (6-4, 6-4), while junior Alex Poynter prevailed in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) against his opponent, UC Irvine's Bruce Man-Son-Hing.
Chase Burton and Sebastian Mermersky won their doubles match, 7-6, on Sunday. Max Borcuti and Salas also collected a 6-3 triumph over a team from Grand Canyon.
Flames junior Eddie Gutierrez faced SDSU's Rafael Gonzalez Almazan in the Flight 2 singles championship match. Gonzalez Almazan prevailed, 6-4, 6-2, with Gutierrez settling for second place. Gutierrez has reached the final in each of his first two tournaments, this fall.
Liberty will resume training in preparation for the ITA Atlantic Regional, which it will host Oct. 19-24, at the Cook Tennis Center.
