Mickey DeMorat holed out from a greenside bunker at No. 18 to help finish in eighth place at the season-opening event.
Liberty was unable to match it second round score as it tried to keep up with the leaders, finishing in seventh place on Sunday at the Rod Myers Invitational.
After carding a 9-under par 279 during its second time around the Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards) on Saturday, Liberty tried to replicate the performance during today's final round of play. However, the Flames were unable, finishing their first event of the 2017-18 season with an overall 6-over par 870 (297-279-294).
Wake Forest posted its second double-digit under par total of the event to claim the team title by seven strokes and win the tournament for the third year in a row. The Demon Deacons' winning score was a 29-under par 835 (282-276-277). Wake Forest finished seven strokes in front of host Duke, who posted a 22-under par 842 (289-279-274) on its home course.
Vanderbilt, who finished last spring ranked No. 1 in the country in the final Golfstat national rankings, took third place with an 18-under par 846 (291-274-281).
Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris (69-67-68) and Oregon's Norman Xiong (68-65-71) proved why they were selected as members for the 2017 Walker Cup roster.
The pair of golfers, who helped Team USA to a dominate victory over Great Britain and Ireland at the summer amateur events, finished tied atop the leaderboard during their first collegiate event of the season with a 12-under par 204.
Liberty's Mickey DeMorat finished four shots behind the winning duo, posting an 8-under par 208 (76-64-68). The senior offset one bogey with five birdies on Sunday, including a hole-out from a greenside bunker on the par-4, No. 18 hole (455 yards).
Ervin Change (73-69-78) and Alexandre Fuchs (71-75-74) were two of the seven golfers who finished tied for 29th place with a 4-over par 220. Both golfers carded three birdies during the final round of the tournament on Sunday.
Isaiah Logue (T57th place: 9-over par 225/78-71-76) and Hutson Chandler (64th place: 15-over par 231/77-78-76) rounded out Liberty's golfers in the field.
The Flames will play their second of five fall golf tournaments on Sept. 25 and 26 when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the Shoal Creek Invitational. The 54-hole event is hosted by UAB at the Shoal Creek Country Club.
