Jorge Azuero posted three wins at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational
Egon Samaai and Jorge Azuero each recorded a trio of wins this past weekend to pace the Liberty Flames men's tennis team at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
Liberty was one of 14 teams represented at the tournament. The field of competitors included players from ACC schools Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina State and North Carolina.
The Flames finished the invitational with 18 total wins, including 12 singles wins and six doubles victories.
"We had a solid weekend in the midst of really strong competition," commented Liberty head coach Chris Johnson. "Congratulations to Jorge and Egon as they had some great wins this weekend."
In singles play, Samaai, competing in the B Singles Bracket, dropped his first round match against Sam Williams of UNC Wilmington, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The freshman rebounded with a victory over Davidson's Chris Mark in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Samaii then defeated Dzmitry Zyhmantovich of Norfolk State 6-3, 6-3. In the consolation bracket final, Furman's Joel Cook took the first set, but Samaii came back and won the last two sets to claim the win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Sergio Mourelo captured an opening round victory in the D1 Singles Bracket over Bharani Sankar of Longwood, 6-3, 7-6 (1). In the quarterfinals, Mourelo downed Elon's Dan Sablik, 6-1, 6-3. Richmond's Aaron Wicker ended Mourelo's run in the semifinals, downing the Liberty freshman, 6-3, 6-0.
Azuero opened play in the D2 Singles Bracket with a win over Steed Johnson of Longwood, 7-5, 6-1. Next up, Azuero went up against Matt Kealy of UNC Wilmington and came away with a three-set victory, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, Azuero fell to Richmond's Dylan Trent, 6-0, 7-6 (3). In the third-place match, Azuero responded with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Cameron Smith of UNCG.
Shea Thomas, Dillon Segur and Guillem Secanell also posted singles wins over the weekend for the Flames.
Thomas and Samaai picked up where they left off at last weekend's UVa Fall Classic and won their opening round match in the B Doubles Bracket against Tim Schweig and Can Cetinel of Old Dominion, 9-7. The duo captured a doubles championship in the Black Bracket in Charlottesville last weekend. Thomas and Samaii then lost to Michael Reilley and Kaue Peirera of UNC Wilmington, 8-2. The Liberty tandem claimed victories in their next two matches, including an 8-5 win over Jon Ho and Anthony Delcore of Wake Forest to claim fifth place.
Also in doubles play, Azuero and Siim Tuus collected two wins and Segur and Secanell tallied a win for Liberty.
Liberty wraps up its fall schedule this weekend at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Charlottesville, Va., beginning on Thursday.
