The Liberty women's soccer team hits the road this week, taking on two of the top four teams in the Big South standings. The Lady Flames begin a three-game road swing against third-place High Point, Thursday. Liberty is looking to maintain its advantage in the all-time series, holding an 11-9-2 record against the Panthers. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. Following its matchup with High Point, Liberty heads to Campbell for a clash with the Fighting Camels. Liberty is looking for just its second win in the all-time series, as Campbell leads Liberty, 4-1. The Lady Flames' lone win against the Fighting Camels, a 3-0 victory, took place in Buies Creek, N.C., on Oct. 9, 2000. Liberty went on to capture its first Big South Championship and set a single-season record for wins (15) that year. A Look at Liberty Liberty got back to its winning ways on Homecoming Saturday, defeating Winthrop at the East Campus Fields, 2-0. Head coach Jessica Hain's squad is now 5-0-1 on the season at the facility. With the victory, Liberty moved to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Big South action. Liberty received first-half goals in the contest from Helena Pereira and Lauren Stell. Midifielder Brittany Aanderud also earned her team-leading fifth assist on the season with a helper on the goal by Stell. Goalkeeper Karen Blocker picked up her league-leading seventh shutout of the season, extending her school record to 18 for her career. Prior to the victory over the Lady Eagles, Liberty played Gardner-Webb to a 1-1 tie, last Thursday. Blocker achieved a milestone in the contest, recording her 300th career save. Freshman forward Jaime Bouffard garnered her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Lady Flames, while Maddie Boone chipped in the helper. Blocker currently leads the league in goals-against average (0.79), save percentage (.826) and shutouts (7). Meanwhile, Aanderud's five assists place her in a five-way tie for second among Big South assist leaders. Bouffard is tied for ninth in the conference in goals (5) and points (12). As a team, the Lady Flames are currently tied for fifth with Winthrop in the conference standings with a 3-2-1 mark in conference play. Radford (5-0-1) leads the way, followed by Longwood (5-1-0), High Point (4-0-2), and Campbell (4-2-0). Liberty is fifth in the league in goals (23) and sixth in assists (16). Defensively, Jessica Hain's squad is first in shutouts (7) and goals-against average (0.79) and is second in fewest goals allowed (12).
High Point at a Glance High Point is undefeated in conference play with a 4-0-2 record, joining Radford as one of just two Big South teams without a conference loss this season. High Point's offense has played a big role in the team's conference success, as the Panthers are averaging 3.17 goals per game and have scored at least two goals in each of their six conference matchups. Junior midfielder Taylor Parker leads High Point with 12 points in conference play on a team-high four goals and four assists. Sophomore Jacky Kessler also has double-digit points in Big South play with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Seven different Panther players have scored more than once in Big South play so far. Sneak Peek at Campbell The Fighting Camels are on a two-game winning streak, after defeating UNC Asheville 3-2 and Presbyterian College 2-1 in Buies Creek last week. Sophomore Ashley Clark's goal off an assist from senior Kirsty Meyer with 12 seconds left in regulation put Campbell on top of the Bulldogs Thursday. Saturday, Meyer and sophomore Melissa Messier scored in the win over the Blue Hose. The wins moved the team to fourth place in Big South standings, behind Radford, Longwood, and High Point. On the season in the Big South, Campbell is tied in third for total points with 68. The team is second in goals per game at 1.85 and is tied for second for assists, at 20. Averaging 1.54, the Fighting Camels are third in assists per game and are fourth in total goals, scoring 24. Prior to Saturday's matchup with Liberty, Campbell hosts Longwood tonight at 7 p.m. Looking Ahead The Lady Flames remain on the road next Thursday, taking on fellow Commonwealth and Big South competitor, VMI. Game time in Lexington, Va., is slated for 4 p.m.
