During the annual bye week, LibertyFlames.com will provide a series of interviews to review the different areas of Liberty's football team, starting today with the special teams.
The Flames' special teams units are led by returning All-Americans Kevin Fogg (return specialist) and Richard Wright (long snapper). Fogg currently leads the Flames in both kickoff returns (23.1 average yards per return) and punt returns (10.4 average yards per return), spotlighted by a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown against Norfolk State.
Liberty is one of 18 FCS programs in the country to have returned a punt for a touchdown in 2012 and the Flames rank No. 28 in the country in kickoff return yardage defense (17.20 average yards per return).
Some of Liberty's key special teams players have been honored this year by the Big South. Fogg was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week following the Norfolk State game.
Freshman kicker John Lunsford received the same honor after the Lehigh game, plus was named Big South Freshman of the Week following his debut against Wake Forest. Lunsford is Liberty's leading scorer with 21 points, as he is a perfect 9-of-9 on point-after attempts and 4-of-7 on field goal attempts.
Junior transfer Grant Bowden has averaged 40 or more yards per punt in three out of the first four games of the year and is maintaining a 40.2 yards per punt average. Seven of his punts have gone for a fair catch, three sailing for 50 or more yards and a trio pinning opponents inside the 20-yard line.
