Mike Brown, the VaSID first-team all-state quarterback, was one of Liberty's five selections to the 2011 VaSID all-state football team.
The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its 2011 all-state university division football team last week, which included five Liberty football players.
Following a 7-4 season and a Big South runner-up finish, Liberty had three players earn first-team all-state honors, while two additional players were named to the VaSID all-state second team.
Mike Brown was named the top quarterback in the Commonwealth in 2011, securing a first-team quarterback selection, along with first-team honors for wide receiver Chris Summers and All-American return specialist Kevin Fogg.
Liberty's second-team all-state selections were offensive lineman Malcolm Boyd and punter Mike Larsson. Brown, a 2010 and 2011 Walter Payton Award candidate, finished his senior season with the Flames with 2,664 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, to go along with 437 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns.
Brown finished his career at Liberty with 6,072 passing yards, 45 passing touchdowns, 1,875 rushing yards, 29 rushing touchdowns and ranked second in school history with 7,947 total offensive yards.
During the 2011 season, Summers became Liberty's all-time career leader in receptions (188), receiving yards (2,712) and touchdowns (26). The 2010 All-America wide receiver posted his second straight 1,000-yard season in 2011, leading the Flames with 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns.
Fogg finished the 2011 season ranked No. 1 in the country with a 33.5 yard kickoff return average, helping him earn All-America honors from the Sports Network, Phil Steele Postseason and the College Sporting News. Fogg set a program record and was one of two Division I football players in the country (both FCS and FBS) to finish the 2011 season with three kickoff returns for a touchdown (New Mexico State's Taveon Rogers also finished with three returns for a touchdown).
Boyd, a first-team All-Big South honoree, started nine out of 10 games for the Flames at left guard, missing one game due to an injury. The junior graded out at 86 percent, recorded 60 knockdowns and allowed just one sack. He was a key part of Liberty's offensive line that helped the Flames finish the year ranked No. 8 in the country in scoring offense (35.91 points per game), No. 19 in passing offense (270.27) and No. 20 in total offense (426.25).
Larsson, a two-time Big South all-conference selection, capped off his career by finishing with a 42.8 yard punting average in 2011. Larsson had 19 career games where he averaged 40 or more yards per punt and would have ranked No. 9 nationally in punting average if he met the NCAA minimum punts per game threshold of 3.6 punts per game (due to Liberty's prolific offense, Larsson only finished 2011 with 3.36 punts per game).
