The Winthrop Lady Eagles used a goal just minutes into the second half and then held off the Liberty Lady Flames for a 1-0 victory in Big South Conference women's soccer, Saturday afternoon at Liberty Soccer Field.
Despite a 9-2 Liberty advantage in shots, the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Of their nine shots, the Lady Flames came the closest to scoring in the game's 29th minute when a shot by midfielder Mandee Judd (Jr., Front Royal, Va.) went off the crossbar and rebounded out.
After intermission, the Lady Eagles scored the game's only goal less than four minutes into the second half. Chelsea White's long pass into the box would find teammate Allison Stoltz who would head it in for her fifth goal of the season at the 48:55 mark.
Winthrop then withstood 11 Liberty shots the rest of the way, including a shot off a free kick by Alaina Hohnarth (Jr., MF, Hamburg, N.J.) which sailed over the crossbar, for the win.
On the afternoon, the Lady Flames out shot the Lady Eagles, 21-4, and held the advantage in corners, 10-1.
Winthrop keeper Dimitra Poulos had a strong afternoon in net, recording 11 saves, while Liberty's Sonia Rodriguez (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) had one save on the afternoon.
The Lady Eagles move to 7-7-1 overall and 2-4 in conference, while the Lady Flames fall to 5-6-2 overall and 2-3 in conference. After winning three straight, Liberty has now dropped its last three games.
Liberty continues Big South Conference play on Tuesday night as the Lady Flames host the Keydets of VMI. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
