Wide receiver Chris Summers is one of five former football players who are going to have a chance to showcase their talents at the NFL level.
Five of Liberty's former football players will have the chance to showcase their talents at the professional level, with two signing free agent contracts and three others receiving mini camp invitations.
Wide receivers B.J. Hayes and Chris Summers have signed free agent contracts, while quarterback Mike Brown, tight end Dominique Jones and defensive back Brandon Robinson have been invited to NFL mini camps.
Hayes signed his free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Summers inked a deal with the Chicago Bears. Brown will display his abilities at the Jacksonville Jaguars mini camp, Jones with the Indianapolis Colts and Robinson with the New Orleans Saints.
Hayes and Summers give Liberty 28 former players to have signed free agent contracts with NFL programs and the first since Trey Jacobs inked a free agent deal with the Washington Redskins in 2010.
Hayes and Summers were Liberty's No. 1 and 3 wide receivers during the 2011 season. After a 1,014-yard, seven-touchdown season, Summers finished his career as Liberty's all-time leader in receptions (188), yards (2,712) and touchdowns (26). Hayes also surpassed the 1,000 career receiving yard mark (1,160) after a 28-reception, 306-yard season in 2011.
Brown, a two-time Walter Payton Award candidate, finished his career ranked No. 1 in program history for quarterback completion percentage (65.0), No. 5 in touchdown passes (45) and No. 6 in passing yards (6,072).
Robinson finished his four years on Liberty Mountain with a banner senior year, nearly doubling his tackle total from his previous three seasons. The defensive back ranked second on Liberty's roster in 2011 with 61 tackles, giving him 126 stops for his four-year career.
Jones helped the Flames to an 8-3 record in 2009, his final year with the program, and a share of the Big South title. During his senior campaign, Jones tied for third on Liberty's roster with two touchdown receptions and recorded seven receptions for 47 yards.
