John Niggli and Ryan Cordell
Liberty right-hander John Niggli has been named the Big South Pitcher of the Week and right fielder Ryan Cordell Co-Player of the Week for games played April 10-17. It is the third time this season that Niggli has received the weekly award.
Cordell hit .692 during Liberty's series win at Winthrop this past weekend. He posted multiple hits in all three games, including three hits in the series opener on Friday and four hits in the final game of the series, Sunday. Cordell also scored eight out of the nine times he was on base, drove in two runs and hit two home runs to finish the series with a .692 on-base percentage and a 1.231 slugging percentage. He also became the second Liberty player to hit two home runs in a game this season, on Sunday in an 11-1 win over the Eagles. His four hits against the Eagles marked the second time this season he has posted a four-hit contest. The right fielder shared the conference honor with Coastal Carolina first baseman Rich Whitten.
Niggli pitched eight scoreless innings in Liberty's 7-0 victory Friday. It was the third shutout in which Niggli has had a hand in this year. He allowed five hits for a .185 opponent batting average and struck out five with one walk. The right-hander retired eight in a row from the second inning to the top of the fifth. Niggli has gone six or more innings in seven of his nine starts and has allowed two or less runs in six outings this season. Previously, Niggli, who is 7-0 with a 1.86 ERA on the year, was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-19 and Feb. 27-March 4. Liberty, 30-9, meets the Georgia Bulldogs this afternoon in Athens, Ga. Game time is 3 p.m.
