The Lady Flames are now 10-11, 3-4 BSC this season.
After taking the tightly contested doubles point, Winthrop claimed each of the six singles matches to win 7-0, Saturday at the Hershey Tennis Courts, snapping the Liberty women's tennis team's six match win streak.
Liberty is now 10-11 overall and 3-4 in Big South matches with the defeat. Winthrop moves to 9-10 this season, but is 5-0 in conference play.
The doubles matches finished in true order, with the visiting Eagles claiming each match. No. 1 duo Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia never trailed, winning 8-5. In the No. 2 match, Alexandra Sheeran and Rebekah Jenkins nearly leveled the match, but Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli closed out the match, 8-6, to secure the opening point. Monica Aguado and Ekin Gunaysu were forced into a tiebreak by Jessie Boda and Carol Lobel in the No. 3 match, but the Eagle pair took the breaker, 7-5.
In singles action, Winthrop continued its strong play, only giving up one set for the entire singles match.
The Eagles clinched the match after singles victories from their No. 3, 2 and 6 positions, taking the 4-0 lead. Garcia's win over Richard in the No. 2 contest snapped the Liberty sophomore's seven match win streak.
Two more straight-set wins in the No. 1 and No. 4 matches set up the sweep for the visitors. Liberty's Lobel had snagged the first game from Gunaysu, 6-3, but the Eagle responded with sets of 6-4, 6-2, to close the match.
After playing six games in a seven-day stretch, the Liberty women's tennis team will return to action on Thursday, April 5, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to face James Madison. Doubles play is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
