Liberty's newest athletics program completed its inaugural season recently, as the field hockey team finished its 2011 slate with a 6-11 mark.  The team played a diverse group of opponents during its first year of collegiate competition, facing programs from each NCAA division, as well as an NAIA program.

Upon completion of its schedule,'s Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with first year head coach Jodi Murphy, as well as the Lady Flames' Helen Doolittle and Ann Jefferis.

Doolittle etched her name in field hockey's record book, scoring the program's first goal in its history, against Radford, Sept. 3.  The freshman continued her scoring throughout the season and finished the year as the team's leader, finding the back of the cage on seven occasions.  The Lancaster, Pa., native also led the team in shots (49), shots on goal (25) and points (14).  On the defensive end of the field, Doolittle provided a defensive save in the team's game against Davidson.

Jefferis, serving as the team's final line of defense, started all 17 contests in goal for the Lady Flames.  The junior transfer and Harleysville, Pa., native had a standout year and currently ranks inside the top-20 in the nation in a pair of NCAA goalkeeper statistics.   Jefferis is No. 6 in the nation in save percentage (.787) and No. 16 in the nation in saves per game (6.94), with only one update in the statistics remaining.  She registered three shutouts on the year.

In the season wrap up, Pierce and Murphy reflect on the season's expectations, the play and highlights from Doolittle and Jefferis as well as the future of the program.
