Zac Edwards won the men's individual title at Saturday's Big South Cross Country Championships, leading Liberty to its seventh straight team crown.
The Liberty men's cross country team won its unprecedented seventh consecutive Big South title on Saturday, helping the Flames climb two spots to No. 13 in the Southeast Region. The regional polls were announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Head coach Brant Tolsma's Flames are joined by conference rival High Point in this week's regional rankings. The Panthers, who finished as the Big South runner-up, check in at No. 14. Newly-crowned ACC champion N.C. State tops this week's Southeast Region rankings, followed by North Carolina at No. 2. Liberty placed five runners in the top 11 on Saturday, enabling the Flames to hold off High Point by a 33-40 score. Leading the way was redshirt junior Zac Edwards, who clocked an 8K time of 23:56 to win the individual championship by 18 seconds. David Ricksecker, Caleb Edmonds and Josh MacDonald all earned All-Big South honors, placing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Isaac Wendland then sealed Liberty's team championship my making a late-race charge up to 11th place. Liberty will now get a chance to square off against all of its regional foes head to head, when the Flames travel to Louisville, Ky. for the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships. The Nov. 12 meet at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park will determine the qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The men's 10K race will begin at 10 a.m., as the Flames attempt to improve upon their eighth-place finish from last season. The women's 6K championship will follow at 11:15.
