Josh McDougal (left) and Brant Tolsma have coached the Liberty men's and women's cross country teams to a solid start to the 2011 season.
After Liberty's successful showing at Friday's Charlotte Invitational, Nick Pierce caught up with Liberty Head Cross Country Coach Brant Tolsma and new school record holder Jennifer Klugh.
Klugh covered the 5K course in a time of 17:28.3, breaking the program record of 17:35 which had stood since 1987. She placed seventh overall in the race and was named Big South Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second time this season.
Despite all of that, Klugh's most exciting moment this past week may have been meeting VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer after Monday morning's Convocation service at the Vines Center. In addition to recapping her record-setting race at Charlotte, Klugh also discussed her love of the VeggieTales with Pierce.
The Liberty men's squad also fared well at Charlotte, placing second overall and defeating regionally-ranked Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Leading the way was redshirt junior Zac Edwards, who won his second straight race and paced three Flames among the top 13 finishers.
Liberty's next meet will be the Panorama Farms Invitational, Oct. 14 in Charlottesville, Va. The Flames and Lady Flames' final tune-up for the Big South Cross Country Championships will begin at 4 p.m.
