Brittany Campbell and the Liberty women's basketball team held their first official practice of the 2011-12 season on Sunday.
The 2011-12 Liberty women's basketball team held its first official practice of the season Sunday afternoon inside the Schilling Center. The practice session was the first of 30 the Lady Flames will conduct in the next 40 days, leading up to their Nov. 11 season opener at UNC Greensboro.
With five freshmen on this year's roster, 13th-year head coach Carey Green focused on reviewing some of the team's most important offensive and defensive principles.
"We have a clear idea of what we want to accomplish this season," Green noted. "So, we are beginning with that end in mind. For the first three or four practices, we will be doing a lot of teaching out on the court."
The Lady Flames return four starters from a team which won 22 games in 2010-11. Yet, for only the second time in the last 15 seasons, Liberty does not begin the year as the defending Big South Conference champion.
Redshirt senior center Avery Warley would certainly like to close her stellar career with another Big South title, but she will be absent from approximately 10 of the Lady Flames' preseason practices. Warley has been selected to represent Team USA in the Pan American Games and will depart for training camp on Oct. 15.
Warley is expected to return to Lynchburg around Oct. 26, which will leave her about two weeks to get reacquainted with her Lady Flames teammates before the previously-mentioned season opener at UNC Greensboro. Liberty will then play its first of 14 home games Nov. 15 against VCU.
