The Liberty softball team claimed its second Big South Championship in 2011. The Lady Flames open the fall season Saturday at James Madison.
The Liberty softball team will compete in its first doubleheader of the fall season, when it heads to Harrisonburg, Va. for a 1 p.m. twin bill versus James Madison Saturday. The two contests against JMU will open the six-game fall schedule for the Lady Flames. Liberty will play host to Patrick Henry Community College, Saturday, Sept. 24, before facing Lynchburg College, Saturday, Oct. 1. Both home doubleheaders will take place at 1 p.m. at Liberty Softball Field. The Lady Flames return six starting position players from 2011, including 2011 Big South Co-Player of the Year Kelly Strickland and second-team all-conference selection Kaylee West. Big South All-Tournament Team members Meredith Crisante and Sammi Shivock also return to the roster. Liberty is the defending Big South softball champion, earning the conference title for the second time in program history with a win over Radford in the Big South final. The Lady Flames went 30-30 in 2011, closing out the season in the NCAA Regional against No. 5 Tennessee and No. 19 Georgia Tech. An additional highlight of the 2011 season came April 20, when Liberty defeated Norfolk State twice, giving head coach Paul Wetmore his 500th career victory.
