Liberty sophomore outside hitter Lillie Happel leads the Big South in kills per set, and has been named ECAC Player of the Week in addition to her conference weekly honor.
Complete ECAC Release LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lillie Happel continues to earn awards for her play this past week, as she was tabbed ECAC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week, announced Tuesday. The Ellicott City, Md., native claimed Big South Player of the Week honors on Monday. She received tournament MVP mention at the Liberty Invitational presented by Pepsi on Saturday. Happel is the first Liberty volleyball player to earn a weekly award from ECAC. The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) is the nation's largest athletic conference, consisting of 88 Division I schools primarily along the East Coast. Along with the Big South, the ECAC also features members from such conferences as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), BIG EAST, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and the Ivy League. Happel, who leads the Big South in kills, averaged 4.11 kills per set while hitting .289 during the Liberty Invitational, leading the Lady Flames to the team championship. Her eight aces led all players at the event, aiding Liberty's 22-ace onslaught over three matches, and she also totaled six blocks on the weekend. She opened the tournament with 16 kills, three aces and five digs in a 3-0 win over Rider. Happel then added a match-high 14 kills to go with a career-high-tying four block assists, three aces and seven digs against Saint Francis (Pa.). Her kill on match point clinched Liberty's sweep of CSU Bakersfield in Saturday's championship match, giving her seven kills on the afternoon. The Lady Flames (4-6) return to the court Friday when they take on N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. at 7 p.m., opening the Courtyard Midtown Invitational. Liberty will then face Towson and The Citadel on Saturday to wrap up its final regular-season tournament.
