Forward Aimee Luurtsema and the Lady Flames kick off the 2011 women's soccer season in Charlottesville, Va. against Virginia on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. Liberty then makes its Osborne Stadium debut on Aug. 29 versus South Carolina State at 7 p.m.
2011 Liberty Women's Soccer Schedule Liberty women's soccer head coach Jessica Hain has announced the 2011 fall schedule, which features 10 home contests for the first time in 12 years. Included in the gamut of games taking place at Osborne Stadium this season is the first-ever Liberty Invitational Tournament (Sept. 2 and 4), a four-squad event consisting of the Lady Flames, fellow Big South competitor Coastal Carolina, Brown and Valparaiso. For the third-consecutive year, Liberty opens its season on the road against Virginia, squaring off with the Cavaliers on Aug. 26. The Commonwealth clash marks the ninth-straight year the Lady Flames have matched up with the ACC power.
Liberty opens its home slate on Aug. 29, playing host to Longwood. The Lady Flames are looking to avenge a late-goal 1-0 loss to the Lancers, which took place on Sept. 24, 2010 in Farmville, Va.
Remaining at Osborne Stadium on Sept. 2, the Lady Flames cap off the first day of the Liberty Invitational Tournament against Brown (7 p.m.) and close out the event on Sept. 4 versus Valparaiso (2 p.m.).
Staying in the Commonwealth, Liberty heads to Richmond to take on the Spiders (Sept. 11) before returning to the Hill City to host South Carolina State (Sept. 16) and Elon (Sept. 18). Liberty closes out non-conference play with a tour of the nation's capital. The Lady Flames take on George Washington for the first time in program history (Sept. 23), followed by a meeting with Howard (Sept. 25). Last season, Liberty hosted the Bison at Osborne Stadium (Sept. 17, 2010), shutting out the MEAC member, 5-0.
Hain's squad opens the conference season with home contests against Coastal Carolina (Sept. 29) and Charleston Southern (Oct. 1). The Lady Flames then hit the road for three straight games against Gardner-Webb (Oct. 6), Winthrop (Oct. 8) and High Point (Oct. 11). Liberty plays under the Osborne Stadium lights in mid-October when it hosts the Big South's newest member Campbell (Oct. 15) on homecoming Saturday. Home contests versus VMI (Oct. 20) and Radford (Oct. 22) are also slated as night games. The team then ends the regular season with contests at Presbyterian College (Oct. 27) and UNC Asheville (Oct. 29).
This year's Big South Conference Championship will take place at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C., Nov. 3-6. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.
