Liberty student-athletes Jeremy Anderson, Karyl Bacon, Preston Dembowiak, Jordan Jenkins, Jennifer Klugh and Panashe Nhekairo have been named to the 2010-11 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State team, it was announced today. Every Commonwealth college and university, including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school. A total of 180 student-athletes at 30 Virginia schools were honored for their academic performance during the past academic year. Jeremy Anderson, who recently graduated with a 4.0 GPA in kinesiology, made the VaSID Academic All-State listing for the second year in a row. The Big South Christenberry Award winner connected on 22 three-pointers during his redshirt junior season on the men's basketball team. He was also included on the Big South All-Academic team for the second straight season. Volleyball senior outside hitter Karyl Bacon was tabbed Big South Woman of the Year after a spectacular season. The first-team All-Big South performer paced the Lady Flames with 496 kills and became the first Liberty player ever to win four Big South regular-season championships. She graduated with a 3.64 GPA in kinesiology and was a second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection as a senior. Preston Dembowiak saved his best season for last, helping the Liberty men's golf team win its first Big South title. The finance major with a 3.70 GPA was voted Big South Scholar-Athlete just before a most impressive performance at the Big South Championship. Dembowiak carded a seven-under par 209, winning medalist honors at the event. Like Anderson, women's tennis senior Jordan Jenkins is part of the VaSID Academic All-State team for the second straight year. The co-Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year played a key role in the Lady Flames' first Big South regular-season championship. She finished the spring with a 12-4 singles record and a 12-6 doubles mark, closing her Liberty career as the all-time wins leader in both categories. Jenkins graduated with a 3.83 GPA in international relations. Jennifer Klugh became the first sophomore to win the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for women's cross country since 1995. A mathematics major with a 3.42 GPA, Klugh enjoyed a stellar campaign, winning Big South titles in cross country, the indoor mile, the indoor 3K and the outdoor 1,500. Panashe Nhekairo of the men's soccer team shared the Christenberry Award with Anderson after graduating with a 4.0 GPA in government. He finished his career with a 2-1 record and a 0.53 goals-against average in net.
