Liberty redshirt senior distance runner Sam Chelanga remains a part of the men's watch list for the 2011 awarding of The Bowerman, as announced by The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee, in conjunction with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Chelanga, one of 10 athletes included on the most recent men's watch list, has run only two races so far this outdoor season. He opened his campaign on March 25 by winning the 10K at the Raleigh Relays. His winning time of 28:15.64 ranks No. 3 on the NCAA national list for 2011.

Chelanga also clocked a 14:02.57 in the 5K, winning the event at the Radford Invitational on April 30.

An 11-time All-American, Chelanga is expected to run both the 5K and 10K at the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet. The meet, which will determine the qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, will be contested May 26-28 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.

The men's 10K at the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet is slated for 9:15 p.m. on May 26. The men's 5K will follow on May 28 at 8:45 p.m.

The full field of qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet will be announced Thursday afternoon.

About The Bowerman
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation. Oregon's Ashton Eaton and Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field/cross country coach Bill Bowerman.

The Bowerman Advisory Board appointed four of its members to comprise The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee and another four of its members to make up The Bowerman Women's Watch Committee. The committee will release its next men's update on June 1. The 10 semifinalists will be named on June 20 and the three finalists will be tabbed on July 13.
