Elliot Galeone's school-record 226-9 javelin toss helped earn him the Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week award.
Liberty redshirt seniors Sam Chelanga and Elliot Galeone were both honored by the Big South Conference on Friday. Chelanga was named Choice Hotels Big South Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Galeone was tabbed Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Chelanga, who garners this honor for the fifth time during the 2010-11 indoor track & field season, ran a pair of races at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas. For the third year in a row, Chelanga finished as the 5K runner-up, clocking a season-best time of 13:27.34. The effort, which was faster than the existing meet record, ranks as the eighth-fastest indoor 5K time in collegiate history. Chelanga also finished 15th in the 3K final the following evening, in a time of 8:11.15. The performance earned second team All-America honors, making the Nairobi, Kenya native a 12-time All-American for his career. Meanwhile, Galeone opened his final outdoor track & field season with a flourish at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. The highlight of his weekend was a 226-9 javelin throw, which broke his own school record and won the competition. The effort ranks No. 4 nationally through the early stages of the 2011 outdoor season. Galeone was not finished, however. He also placed third in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Galeone's 159-10 measurement in the discus qualified him for the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Meanwhile, his 46-8.75 shot put heave set a new outdoor personal best. Chelanga will take a little time off from competition before beginning his outdoor season. However, Galeone will be in action again this weekend, at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is entered in the javelin, discus and shot put.
