For the fourth time this year, Robert Karlsson has been recognized for his efforts on the golf course, as the junior has been named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week earlier today by the conference office. Karlsson is coming off a career outing at the Rio Pinar Invitational, as the junior finished the event tied for first place. He lost medalist honors on the first playoff hole to fellow first-place finisher Florida Gulf Coast's David Mazziotta (65-69-70). Karlsson carded a 12-under par 204 (69-70-65) during the UCF-hosted event in Orlando, Fla. The red-number figure tied a 54-hole career low, as he also fired a 204 at the 2009 Renaissance Invitational. The Swedish-born golfer finished this week's event with a seven-under par 65, also tying a career-low 18-hole score that he set at the Renaissance Invitational. This marks the fourth time in his three-year career at Liberty that Karlsson has finished atop the leaderboard at an event. The junior also now has Top 5 finishes in 17 out of his 29 career events. Karlsson currently leads the Big South with a 71.2 stroke average, a figure that is nearly two strokes clear of Radford's Weston Eklund who ranks second in the league (73.00). As previously mentioned, Karlsson has been named Big South Men's Golfer of the Week three other times this golf season (twice during the fall and the opening week of the spring season). In total, the junior has received seven weekly honors from the league since starting competition for the Flames during the spring 2009 season. Following the share for first place at the Rio Pinar Invitational, Karlsson finds himself ranked No. 22 in the latest Golfstat rankings and listed No. 51 by Golfweek. Karlsson is up six spots from last week's Golfstat rankings and found a seven-spot improvement in the Golfweek listing. Despite finishing ahead of No. 25 N.C. State and only finishing five shots behind No. 31 UCF on its home course, Liberty's Golfstat team ranking remained the same at No. 33 this week. The Flames did improve six spots in the Golfweek team rankings, up to No. 33. Additionally, the Flames started receiving votes in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Top 25 Men's Division I poll. Liberty pulled in 10 votes in the March 16th national ranking, leaving the Flames the fifth team out of the Top 25 poll at No. 30. Liberty will return to the golf course next week when the Flames travel to Laredo, Texas, to participate in the Border Olympics. The 54-hole event is hosted by No. 74 Houston at the Laredo Country Club.
