Freshman Jen Moyer led Liberty with four goals on Saturday against Siena.
Seeking its second win of the season on Saturday, the Liberty women's lacrosse team squared off with MAAC member Siena. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Saints put together a 9-0 run in the contest en route to a 19-6 victory at Siena Turf Field.
Liberty falls to 1-2 on the season with the defeat, while Siena improves to 3-3 on the year.
Entering the contest with one goal on the season, freshman Jen Moyer paced the Liberty offense, netting four of the Lady Flames' six markers. Karis Walborn and Emily Dinsmore also chipped in a goal apiece for Liberty. Siena's Allie Primo and Erin Hepper led the Saints with four tallies, each.
The Saints came out marching during the early moments of the first half, receiving goals from Primo and Caitlyn Mikel in the opening 1:17. Moyer cut the deficit in half to put Liberty on the board with a marker at 22:48. After another Siena score, Moyer found the net again at 19:12 to make it 3-2, allowing the Lady Flames to once again climb within one.
However, the home team prevented the visiting Lady Flames from knotting the contest, posting three tallies in a near four-minute span. Liberty's second leading scorer, Karis Walborn, halted the Saints hot streak, receiving a pass from Nina Dunay and finishing the play for her sixth goal of the season.
Siena's leading scorer Deirdre McQuillian quickly answered for the Saints, firing a shot into the back of the Liberty net to regain a four-point lead. Following four and a half minutes of scoreless action, Moyer broke the silence with another marker to cement a hat trick at the 9:38 mark. Siena then closed out the first half with four unanswered goals to take an 11-4 lead into the locker room at half time.
After opening the second period with a near six-minute scoring drought, the Saints picked up where they left off in the first, reeling off five more goals, extending the run to nine. The flurry gave the home team a 16-4 advantage with 14:59 remaining in the contest.
Just over two minutes later, Moyer gave Liberty its fifth goal of the game to break up the Saints' scoring burst. Hepper prevented the Lady Flames from stringing together back-to-back markers, as she recaptured the 12-point margin with a tally at 10:04. Emily Dinsmore recorded Liberty's final goal with 6:16 left on the clock. The Saints then closed out contest by finding the back of the net two more times for the 19-6 final.
Masullo occupied the Liberty net for 43:28, picking up 11 saves, bringing her season total to 36. Blaire Barnhart stepped in for 16:32 of the first period, finishing with five saves and one ground ball. Krisitin Concordia played the entire contest in goal for Siena, posting five stops.
Liberty continues its Spring Break road trip on Tuesday, taking on Central Connecticut State. The contest marks the second meeting between the Lady Flames and the Blue Devils. Last season, the NEC member paid a visit to Osborne Stadium, leaving Lynchburg with a 21-9 victory on March 26, 2010. The opening draw for the rematch in New Britain, Conn., is set for 4 p.m.
