Flames Drop Blue Hose, 7-0, in Home Opener

The Liberty men's tennis team made the most of its home opener, Friday afternoon, picking up its first Big South win with a 7-0 win over Presbyterian College.

The Flames (4-6, 1-1 Big South) started off with a pair of victories in doubles to secure the first team point on the afternoon. Tristan Stayt and Mandeep Yadev provided the first win, defeating Zachary Sprouse and Edward Snead, 8-6, in the No. 3 spot. Siim Tuus and Benjamin Wirth gave the Flames the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 position, taking down Andrew Brigham and Rafael Berghaus, 8-4. Giancarlo Lemmi and Shea Thomas came up just short in their No. 2 doubles match, falling 10-8 to Gonzalo Asis and Nathan Crocker.

Liberty continued its momentum in the singles matches, winning each of the six singles contests on the afternoon. The first four matches all went in straight sets, while the final two took three sets to decide.

The No. 4 and No. 1 matches were the first to go final, as Tuus and Lemmi each picked up 6-3, 6-4 wins over their Presbyterian College (9-7, 0-2 Big South) opponents. Stayt and Thomas continued the Flames' dominance, winning their respective No. 2 and No. 3 matches in straight sets as well. Stayt defeated Berghaus 6-2, 6-4, while Thomas won 6-4, 7-6 (5).

While Yadev and Stanislav Vaughan both fell behind by dropping their opening sets, each would rally to complete the 7-0 sweep of the Blue Hose in the Flames' first home contest of the season. Mandeep Yadev fought to defeat Asis, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 while Vaughan won 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The Flames now turn to their spring break trip, as they travel to Orlando, Fla., for three matches. Liberty will match up with Colgate, Bucknell and NJIT in the Sunshine State, holding one contest each day from March 14-16.
