Siim Tuus provided wins at both No. 1 singles and doubles in the Flames' 4-3 win over Richmond, Saturday.
After sweeping the doubles matches, the Liberty men's tennis team split the singles decisions on their way to a 4-3 win over Richmond, Saturday night.
The Flames' victory snapped a four-match slide and brings their record to 2-5 on the season. The win was also the program's third-straight victory over the Spiders. Each of their victories have been in tight 4-3 matches. Meanwhile, Richmond falls to 3-7 on the year.
Liberty began the match by dominating doubles play, earning wins in all three contests to take the point. Siim Tuus and Benjamin Wirth paired up in the No. 1 spot to defeat A.J. Nelson and Jesse Feder, 8-7 (2), in the closest doubles match in the dual.
Giancarlo Lemmi and Shea Thomas knocked off Zach Carl and Pablo Arana, 8-2 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup, while Tristan Stayt and Mandeep Yadev rounded out the sweep in No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 defeat over Sebastien Fauchet and Dylan Schrode.
Moving to singles play with a one point advantage, the Flames then split the six contests in order to earn the 4-3 overall victory.
After dropping his opening set to Fauchet, 6-2, Tuus rallied back to earn wins in the final two sets at No. 1 singles. He took the second set, 6-3, before finishing the match by claiming a 6-4 final set.
Thomas and Yadev provided the other two victories for Liberty in singles, in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Each defeated their opponents in straight sets.
Thomas took down Justin Baker, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 contest, while Yadev won 6-2, 6-2 against Carl.
Liberty's men now take a week away from competition. Their next match comes next Saturday, when they travel to Winthrop. The dual with the Eagles opens Big South play for the Flames, with the match slated for a 2 p.m. start.
