John Caleb Sanders earned his first Big South Freshman of the Week award on Monday.
The Big South Conference announced today that Liberty guard John Caleb Sanders has been named the Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for his performance in Saturday's game against league leader Coastal Carolina. The announcement was made by the conference office this afternoon. The nod marks the second straight week the Flames have received a conference weekly honor, as Sanders' older brother, Jesse, was named the Big South Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 3. The younger Sanders finished with a career-high 16 points in 16 minutes in a narrow 70-67 defeat to the Chanticleers, Saturday night. The Sugar Land, Texas native went 6-for-8 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. In the first half, the freshman posted Liberty's final seven points to keep the Flames within two possessions of the Chanticleers. With time winding down in the second half, Sanders resurfaced to help chip away at a 10-point deficit, knocking down a 25-foot trey to cut the margin to two with nine seconds remaining. Sanders and the Flames return to action on Thursday to take on High Point. Tipoff inside the Millis Center is slated for 7 p.m.
